Commentary

  • We go again - Righto, this top-of-the-table clash has ended up being a one-sided affair, and Antigua & Barbuda Falcons have sealed a top-two finish, which means they will play Qualifier 1 and get two bites at the cherry to make the final. Guyana Amazon Warriors are on 12 points and have three matches to get just one more win to seal the top spot themselves. Action in the CPL keeps coming thick and fast as, within the space of 24 hours, Guyana Amazon Warriors go again. They take on Saint Lucia Kings in Match 31 of the season at the Providence Stadium. That game will be played on September 9, Wednesday, at 11 pm GMT (4.30 am IST the next day). You can also join us much earlier for the build-up as usual. Cheers!

  • Victorious captain of Antigua & Barbuda Falcons - Moeen Ali says that this is their best win so far, and they wanted to show that they can beat Guyana in their own backyard, which feels special. On Amir Jangoo, he says that he's generally done well to lay the foundation, but does agree that they would like a few more runs up top and not leaving too much for the death overs. On the bowling, Ali says that the opposition got off to a flier, but the wicket was a bit on the lower side at one end and didn't want to bowl spin to Gurabz inside the Powerplay. Also mentions that they have a good attack, not the best, but pretty well-rounded.

  • Imran Tahir of Guyana Amazon Warriors - Tahir says that they gave away a few too many runs in the death overs, and they need to regroup quickly and come back stronger tomorrow. On Romario Shepherd's bowling, he says that he felt Shepherd's cutters would be useful, and a few lapses in the field didn't help either. Goes on to add that one of their top four needs to be out there till the 15th over. He ends by saying that this is a kind of defeat where he can't blame anyone, and hopes that it was just an off day for the team.

  • Let's now hear from the two skippers...

  • Falcons turn adversity into defeat - Antigua & Barbuda Falcons were teetering along with the bat for about 16-17 overs and Guyana Amazon Warriors had done a fairly decent job with the ball. However, Shadab Khan's fiery cameo uplifted them to over the 180-run mark. With the ball, Alzarri Joseph came out breathing fire, going past the 145 kph mark regularly, and even though he got hit for a few boundaries, his ability to take wickets proved to be decisive. The Falcons picked up 4 wickets in the Powerplay and then the spinners came in and were relentless. Shadab Khan and Sufyan Moqim shared 4 wickets amongst them, picking up two each as Joseph came back in to get a four-wicket haul, with Joshua James also contributing with a couple of wickets. Overall, it was a fine all-round bowling performance.

  • Guyana's joy ends - After six successive wins and dominating opponents, Guyana Amazon Warriors have finally fallen - and how! This is the first time this season that they have been bowled out, and it was a rather uncharacteristic batting display. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mavendra Dindyal did start off with a plethora of boundaries, but soon enough, the wickets started to fall. They lost 4 wickets inside the Powerplay, and the game was lost then and there. Mohammad Nabi held up one end, but he saw just wickets fall at the other end. The only partnership of any substance late in the game came between Nabi and Imran Tahir as they added 18 runs for the 9th wicket, but as soon as Tahir got out, it was all over pretty soon.

  • Player of the Match - Shadab Khan gets the accolade for his all-round display (30 runs off 9 balls and 2/19 with the ball). He starts by talking about his batting and feels that his role is such that he needs to maximize the deliveries, and sometimes it comes off like today. Also mentions that he had a bit of an idea of which bowler to attack and goes on to say that he tries to do any sort of job that the team needs him to do. On his bowling, he says that the pitch was a bit on the lower and slower side, so he tried to keep it simple and not do anything funky. On the win, he says that this kind of win is special, especially against a team like Guayana and hopes that they can perform like this in the playoffs as well.

  • Finishing on a high - Antigua & Barbuda Falcons have now played all of their league stage games, and they have become the first team to inflict defeat on the mighty Guyana Amazon Warriors this season. The Falcons also go temporarily top of the table with 13 points to their name, and with a plyoff berth already sealed, they will look to relax as they will get an extended break.

Mohammad Nabi lbw b Joshua James 23 (22)

OUT! LBW! And that will do it for Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, as they beat Guyana Amazon Warriors by 65 runs. Joshua James lands it a tad fuller of a good length and around middle, getting the ball to jag back in off the deck. Mohammad Nabi puts forward a front-foot defence but the ball beats the inside edge and goes on to hit the pads. There is a huge appeal, and the umpire gives it out. Nabi reviews it. Nothing on UltraEdge, and there are three reds on Ball Tracking.

  • 14.1

A slower short ball around off, doesn't rise much. Mohammad Nabi looks to play a controlled pull but misses.

  • Joshua James returns to the attack, replacing Shadab Khan.

    Imran Tahir b Alzarri Joseph 8 (14)

OUT! BOWLED'EM! Alzarri Joseph gets a four-fer here, and Imran Tahir is livid with himself, slamming his bat down on the deck. Full and straight, well over 140 clicks, just nibbling away late. Tahir hangs back and has a tentative poke at it, but the ball beats the outside edge and kisses the off stump. The Falcons are just one wicket away from the win now.

  • 13.4

Back of a length, in and around off at 142 clicks. Tahir hops back and fends it to backward point.

  • 13.3

Slower delivery, pitched up on middle. Tahir leans on and shovels it to short mid-wicket.

  • 13.2

Good length, honing in at the stumps from wider on the crease. Nabi bunts it into the off side and picks up a quick single.

  • 13.1

Back of a length and outside off, it is the off-cutter from Joseph. Nabi glides it down to the right of deep third for a couple of runs.

  • Alzarri Joseph (3-0-38-3) is back on to finish his spell.

  • 12.6

A googly to finish from Shadab Khan, and he ends with 2/19 off his 4 overs. On the shorter side and wide outside off, doesn't turn much. Tahir hangs back and dabs it down to short third.

  • 12.5

Dragged length outside off, patted away towards cover for a single.

  • 12.4

Seam-up delivery, hammered into the pitch and wide of the off stump. Nabi tries to get some bat on it but is beaten.

  • 12.3

Slightly shorter, pushed away wide outside off. Nabi reaches out and cuts it down to backward point.

  • 12.2

A googly, not all that full, and slower too. Tahir lunges ahead and smothers it behind square leg for one more.

  • 12.1

Tossed up, fuller on off, Nabi lofts it on the bounce to the long off fielder for a single.

  • Shadab Khan to continue and finish off his spell.

Bowled from around the wicket, fuller and just darted outside off at 92.2 kph. Tahir misses the drive and that's well pouched by the keeper. 72 needed now off 48 balls.
