    ... THE RUN CHASE ...

  • 0.0

Middle-order mayhem - Loftie-Eaton ripped through the middle order with three more wickets, and Ireland never found the finish they were looking for, ending on 229, losing nine wickets. Namibia have a target on the board, and the hosts will fancy their chances of drawing first blood in this five-match series. The target is pretty much achievable, but some early inroads from the visitors might add some more spice to the game. Stick with us as the second chapter will unfold in some time.

Loftie-Eaton takes charge - Just as the Irish captain looked set to cash in, Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton struck, removing the big fish and swinging the momentum. Harry Tector and Carmichael then added 54 to rebuild, and things looked healthy for the visitors. But the moment that stand was broken, Loftie-Eaton was off again.

  • 0.0

The start that the visitors hoped for - Ireland got off to a flying start, with the openers setting the tone and putting Namibia on the back foot early. Bernard ended Andrew Balbirnie’s stay, and the run rate dipped as Cade Carmichael took his time to settle. Paul Stirling, though, was in glorious touch, and his 56 off 71 balls looked the foundation for something big.

From cruising to crumbling - From a commanding 149 for 2 start to finishing on 229, Ireland’s middle order lost their nerve just when the innings needed a vital push. It’s a collapse that says it all. Hats off to Namibia’s bowlers, too. They were rocked early, but they regrouped, tightened their lines and dragged the game right back into the contest.

  • 49.7

A couple of runs to end the innings, and Ireland finish with 229/9 on the board. Full and at the toes, whipped away off the pads and to the right of the deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs by Jai Moondra.

  • 0.0

Jai Moondra will be facing the last delivery of the innings.

  • 49.6

OUT! BOWLED! Well, Jack Brassell says he'll do it himself and does get rid of Liam McCarthy. Brassell bowls it quick and a bit full, attacking the pads. Liam McCarthy makes a bit of room and swings hard across the line, only to miss the ball completely. The ball then goes on to crash into the leg stump and Ireland lose their 9th wicket with a ball to play.

  • 49.5

DROPPED! Jack Brassell misses out on a well-deserved wicket, and Waldo Smith is the culprit here. Pitched up on leg stump, McCarthy moves inside the line and laps it down to fine leg. Smith moves to his left and dives in but fails to pouch it. The batters pick up two runs.

  • 49.4

Brassell goes fuller and wider of the off stump now. Liam McCarthy is standing leg side of the ball and is rooted to the crease, unable to reach it.

  • 49.3

Pitched up on the pads, McBrine looks to whip it leg side but misses. The ball rolls off his pads just to the leg side and the batters samper through for a leg bye.

  • 49.2

WIDE! Trying too hard here. Hard length, looking to tuck up the batter but this is spilled well down the leg side.

  • 49.1

A sharp bumper, darting it across off. McBrine reaches out to ramp it away but is beaten for pace and bounce.

  • 0.0

Who will bowl the final over? Jack Brassell has 2 overs left and Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton has one. Brassell it is!

  • 48.6

A slower bumper to end the over. Dug in short and just outside off, getting it in around head height. Liam hops up and tries to uppercut it away but misses. 9 runs and a wicket off the 49th over.

  • 48.5

SIX! That's come out of nowhere. Pitched up at the stumps, angling into middle and leg. Liam McCarthy clears the front leg and just wallops it in front of mid-wicket and sends the ball sailing out of the ground for a huge six.

  • 48.4

No run there! Nagging length around off, Liam McCarthy gets forward and nudges it off the inside edge onto his pads. The ball just rolls past the off stump and he looks for a single, but McBrine sends him back.

  • 0.0

Ireland lose their eighth wicket. Liam McCarthy is the new batter.

  • 48.3

OUT! TIMBER! Another one bites the dust, and JJ Smit picks up his second wicket. Smit comes a bit wider on the crease, bowls it into the deck, on a good length and gets the ball to dart back in sharply. This is a bit full and Gavin Hoey backs away to swing it leg side but is beaten all ends up. The ball goes on to smash into the leg pole, knocking it out off the ground.

  • 48.2

Heavy length from Smit, around off. McBrine comes down the track and just bunts it down in front of extra cover for a single.

  • 48.1

McBrine immediately calls for two and manages to get back as well. Good length on off, angling in. McBrine gets forward and works it away in front of deep mid-wicket for a brace.

  • 47.7

A slower one to finish, and that is a fine final over from Ruben Trumpelmann, only 2 runs and a wicket off it. Back of a length and outside off. Hoey has a swipe at it but misses.

  • 47.6

Short of a length, slanted back in from wide of the off stump. Gavin Hoey angles it down to short third and looks for a single but he is sent back by McBrine.

  • 0.0

    Gavin Hoey walks up next.

  • 47.5

OUT! TIMBER! Curtis Campher never looked settled against Ruben Trumpelmann, and now has to walk back, leaving Ireland at 214/7 in 47.4 overs. Trumpelmann hits a back of a length and darts it in towards the top of the stumps. Campher backs away to pull but it isn't short enough. The ball skids through under the bat and hits the top of middle stump, and Trumpelmann has his first wicket of the game.

  • 47.4

WIDE! This is dug in way short and around off. Curtis Campher hops up and tries to uppercut but the ball sails over.

  • 47.3

And again! This is poor from Campher. A bit short and well wide, Campher brings out the reverse again and misses again as well. Had he played it normally, it would have been there to cut.

  • 47.2

Campher misses out here. Back of a length, in and around off stump. Curtis Campher goes for the reverse lap but fails to connect.

  • 47.1

On a heavy length, dug in at the batter. McBrine gives a charge and pulls it without much timing through wide mid on for a single.

Plenty more action to come - Well, it is just the start and we still have 4 matches to go in the series. For now, Ireland are on top with a pretty solid win, and hosts Namibia will be eager to bounce back. The second ODI will be played on Saturday, October 24, right here in Windhoek, beginning at 7.30 am GMT. However, you can also join us sooner for the build-up. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

Ireland's skipper reflects on the game - Paul Stirling starts by addressing the toss, noting that Namibia's decision to bowl first was the ideal call, particularly given the conditions on this surface. Despite losing the toss, the skipper expresses immense satisfaction with how his side responded and performed. He then praises the batting unit for showing great intent to set a formidable total on the board, while highlighting the bowlers for executing their plans disciplinedly to close out a comfortable victory. Stirling also lauds star bowler Gavin Hoey for an exceptional performance, praising his disciplined lines and lengths. The skipper notes that Hoey's hard work and improvement are clearly reflecting on the field, expressing confidence that even bigger achievements lie ahead for the young bowler. Reflecting on the playing conditions, Stirling emphasizes that when pitch dynamics narrow the gap between competing sides, tactical accuracy becomes paramount. He acknowledges that while the team usually prioritizes taking wickets and imposing raw threats, precision is critical in these surroundings, a quality Namibia showcased brilliantly throughout the match.

Let's now hear from Namibia's skipper - Gerhard Erasmus says that they were delighted to be in a position of promise after the first 10 overs of the chase, but unfortunately they allowed the spinners to dictate terms and started to keep rolling down. On Ruben Trumpelmann, Erasmus says that he is delighted to see him bat well and that he can be crucial at times. Gerhard then goes on to take ownership of the loss and feels they could have batted well, and also feels that both teams missed their marks a bit with the new ball.

Player of the Match - For his figures of 3/29 in 9 overs, Gavin Hoey has been given the award. Gavin Hoey opens by expressing his delight with the victory, sharing that he hopes to maintain this strong momentum in the upcoming matches. Addressing their collective effort with the ball, he attributes their defensive discipline to following the coaching staff's instructions, focusing strictly on maintaining tight lines, disciplined lengths, and consistently targeting the right areas on the pitch. On the upcoming matches, he states that they have learned a lot from today's game about how the ball was reacting after hitting the surface. Ends up saying that if the pitch stays the same, they will try to keep things simple, like they have done today.

A lot of work to do - Namibia will feel they have let things slip here. It was a fine comeback with the ball in the first innings, and they didn't even allow Ireland to get close to the 250-run mark, thanks to a four-fer from Bernard Scholtz and also the other who backed him up. However, their batting is an area of concern. Michael van Lingen and Louren Steenkamp both got off to starts, but those who followed fell quickly and the way they were dismissed left a lot to be desired. Skipper Gerhard Erasmus tried to fight back as he generally does, but if not for Ruben Trumpelmann, Namibia would have lost by a humongous margin. His fighting 50 was merely a consolation, though, as Namibia's fate was sealed long ago.

Winning start for Paul Stirling and co. - It has been a bit of a tough year in terms of ODI cricket for Ireland, but they have started this series in style. Not the best batting performance, but skipper Paul Stirling looked in pristine touch, and batters from 1-6 all got starts, which is also a bit of a positive. The real reason for Ireland's win, however, was their bowlers. The pacers didn't have the best of starts, but Jai Moondra did get an early wicket. Then, Gavin Hoey came in and chipped in with a few quick wickets, three total. Ireland had the opposition reeling at 110/7 as George Dockrell also picked up a couple of wickets. There was late resistance from the opposition batters but Ireland managed to clean things up and cruised to the finish line.

Ireland take the early lead - A wonderful performance with the ball and in the field has handed the visitors, Ireland, a 1-0 lead over hosts Namibia in this five-match ODI series. On paper, it does seem like a big win, but there wasn't much in it, barring the fact that Ireland had a bit more contribution with the bat right throughout the order.

    Ruben Trumpelmann b Liam McCarthy 50 (43)

OUT! BOWLED'EM! Liam McCarthy has hammered the final nail into the coffin and with that, Ireland has won the first of the five-match ODI series by 55 runs against Namibia. He pitches it on a good length, just outside off, angling in, but nips it away at the very last moment. Ruben Trumpelmann prods forward to defend it with the full face of the bat, but it just misses the outside edge by a thin air and hit the top of the off stump.

  • 37.4

FOUR! What a way to bring up FIFTY! Trumpelmann has stood tall against the Irish bowlers and has notched his third half-century in ODIs. Short of a length, just outside off. Ruben Trumpelmann covers the stumps, goes deep into the crease and pulls it away to deep square leg for four runs.

Swing and a miss! Moondra bangs into the deck and gets some bounce off it, into the channel of uncertainty. Jack Brassell tries to cut it through point, but gets beaten on the top edge.

  • 0.0

DRINKS! Ireland are on the brink of a big win here and they have been really good in the field. Namibia will be disappointed with how their middle order performed with the bat and will be thinking about bouncing back in the next game. This game isn't all over yet and Ruben Trumpelmann has batted superbly, and he would like to do some more damage before the end of proceedings.

  • 34.6

A touch fuller, outside off, Jack Brassell slices it to sweeper cover and gets a single.

  • 34.5

Full, outside off, Jack Brassell pushes it to cover.
