Commentary

  • All to play for in the decider - This has been a thrilling white-ball series, across the ODIs and the T20Is alike. West Indies have not let India breathe easy at any stage, and with the T20I series locked at 2-2, a mouth-watering finale awaits. Before it arrives, India must sharpen up with the ball, since they still have no answer to the leakage of runs. West Indies, for their part, are ruthless on their day, as tonight showed, and they will hope to spring another shock on the hosts by winning the series. The fifth and final T20I will be played at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, 17th October. The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 1.30 pm GMT (7 pm IST). But do join us for the buildup in advance. Until then, take care, CIAO!

  • PLAYER OF THE MATCH - The captain of the West Indies, Shai Hope, takes home the award for his match-defining and unbeaten 102 (50). His innings was graced by four fours and nine sixes. He starts by joking about all the Player of the Match awards, and says that the awards are a bit heavy and won't fit in the luggage. He then talks about the game, and feels that they laid down the foundation with the bat really well.Hope goes on to say that he felt 240 plus was a very decent score, because they went in expecting a flat deck, but after starting his innings, he felt that the ball was holding in the deck and their score on the board was a good one. Hope talks about giving bowlers three overs in a row in this format, and says that he feels it is always going to be tough for a bowler to stay consistent. He also mentions that with the dew around, you'd always want to chase on these surfaces and ends by hoping that it's a cracker of a game in Bengaluru.

  • The Indian captain - Shreyas Iyer reflects on the defeat. He straightaway admits that they couldn't execute their plans with the ball. Accepts that they didn't bowl the right lines and lengths. Adds that in a chase this big, they need to follow a certain pattern. Says he liked what he saw in terms of approach in the run chase, but reiterates that with bowling plans falling flat, it all made the difference. Looking at the Powerplay, he points out India were still scoring at around 12 an over, even with the pitch offering a bit. West Indies used their fields smartly, he adds, and he gives credit where it's due, calling their execution spot on. On the surface, Iyer notes that it started holding up more and offering some bounce, and the West Indies bowlers read that well, especially through the middle overs. Getting to 220 in a chase despite wickets falling, he notes, showed the attitude of every individual in the side.

  • ... The post-match Presentation ...

  • Let's hear it from the man of the moment - Keemo Paul, the star with the ball, says that he is very happy that the team won. He adds that they had a simple plan to nail the yorker, and if that didn't work, bowl into the pitch, as it was gripping a bit. On his comeback to the national team, Paul starts by thanking the Almighty, and goes on to say that they have a great bunch of players, well led by Shai Hope, and just wants to do well. He also adds that the players were even more pumped and not under pressure as they thought about leveling the series. On Gudakesh Motie, Paul says that his spell was crucial, as it wasn't easy under pressure, and he feels that Motie did a fine job. He ends by saying that the group is coming together well and on their day, they feel like they can beat any opposition in the world.

  • Hope lights up Hyderabad - Six-hitting has been a feature of this series, but Shai Hope at his best was something else entirely. This may well be his finest white-ball series yet, one-dayers included. Only a few days ago, he steered a chase of 250 with a match-winning century. Tonight, he lifted West Indies to 247 with a fluent 102. The support was just as ruthless. Hetmyer, Powell and Rutherford all chipped in around their captain’s bold knock, and the Indian bowlers were punished at every turn. Prince Yadav was the only one to escape with credit, finishing with 1/36. Every other bowler leaked more than 11 an over, which only underlined how much India’s attack has struggled across this series.

  • Tilak and Reddy kept the fight on - With the asking rate soaring, India had no option but to keep their foot down. Abhishek Sharma could not handle the pressure this time and fell, but Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy took the fight head-on with a swashbuckling stand of 70. Tilak got dismissed at the most inopportune time, and with Reddy’s wicket, the hope and the chase both slipped out of India's grasp with the wheels completely coming off. Pun intended. But there were moments that turned the game. Gudakesh Motie was one of them. He was brought on late and bowled only two overs, yet he removed both Abhishek and Dhir, which forced India to rebuild yet again. In a chase this big, that is a huge ask, especially through the middle overs.

  • The battle of sixes - With a galaxy of hitters on display, the sixes told part of the story. West Indies cleared the rope 16 times to India’s 13, a gap of three that was worth 18 runs. Add the 18 extras leaked by the Indian bowlers, and that was far too generous in a game decided by 24. It is a game of margins, as they say. India have also lost the battle of sixes across this series, and that has made all the difference. West Indies made a fast start with the bat, but India’s reply was even fiercer, powered by Sanju Samson’s ballistic 56 off just 23 balls. He gave the massive chase a flying launchpad, until Keemo Paul removed him and then sent back Kishan in the same over, leaving India at 67/2. Iyer’s wicket at a bad time made it 97/3. Through all of that, in a rare twist, Abhishek Sharma faced only a handful of deliveries and had to adapt to the role of anchor.

  • Maroon outshines Blue - What a fightback from West Indies! With their backs against the wall and both of the last two games must-wins, they have not only avoided a series defeat, for now, but also sent the hosts a strong message that they are here to win. There was plenty of talk about how this relaid surface would behave. It played well for the batters, no doubt about that, with the bowlers sent on a tour of every corner of the park. Yet in a high-scoring game, it was Keemo Paul's five-wicket haul that carried the most weight.

  • Ouch! Arshdeep Singh is looking in some discomfort and is unable to continue. A blow to the batting team as Arshdeep Singh is retired hurt.

  • Arshdeep is down on his haunches, clutching his left shoulder as Nitin Menon, the on-field umpire, checks on him. From the Indian dugout, Shreyas Iyer signals for him to come off the field. And that's that. Arshdeep is walking off, which means West Indies win by 24 runs and draw level 2-2 in this 5-match T20I series. It's a flat end to such an entertaining game, and India will be hoping the injury is not a serious one that rules Arshdeep out of the series decider in Bengaluru. Losing him would be another heavy blow to the bowling stocks that have already taken plenty of punishment this series.

  • End of Over 19.4
    Over 19.4. 10 runs. Bowler: Shamar Joseph. : 223/9 (rr 11.44)
    This Over: 4,1(1WD),0,0,5(5WD)
  • 19.4

FIVE WIDES! Nearly another nasty blow, but what is Shamar Joseph even trying to do? Arshdeep Singh is constantly exposing all three stumps, and yet Joseph isn't targeting the stumps, only hampering his own figures further. Banged in quick and short and this one angles well down the leg side, past a charging Arshdeep and rolls away to the fine leg fence. Singh is in agonizing pain once again.

  • Arshdeep is in obvious discomfort after taking a nasty blow on his bowling arm, and the physio rushes out to take a look. He decides to stay on, but his body language says he is far from comfortable.

  • 19.3

Ouch! Singh looks to back away again, and Joseph bowls it quick and short, darting it into the batter. Singh ends up getting cramped for room and takes a blow to the left bicep. That's a sore one to get.

  • 19.2

Slower again, but into the pitch this time and angled into the batter. Singh comes down the pitch, looking to swing across the line but is undone by the lack of pace.

  • 19.2

WIDE! Joseph hasn't found his rhythm at all in this series. Slower ball, trying to bowl a wide yorker but this is spilled beyond the tramline.

  • 19.1

FOUR! Streaky! Short of a good length and around off, Arshdeep Singh backs away and goes after it, slicing it over short third for a boundary.

  • Shamar Joseph (2-0-35-0) will wrap it up. Can he get a wicket to improve his figures slightly? West Indies have been penalised for a slow-over rate. But that hardly matters now. But they will have to keep an extra fielder inside the inner-ring.

  • End of Over 19
    Over 19. 8 runs. Bowler: Keemo Paul. : 213/9 (rr 11.21)
    This Over: 1(1WD),6,0(W),0(W),1,0(W),0,
  • 18.6

A dot to end a stellar spell, and Keemo Paul finishes with figures of 4-0-41-5! Full of a good length, wide outside off. Mayank Yadav swings and misses.

  • Keemo Paul's joy knows no bounds tonight. He cannot do anything wrong bowling-wise. Mayank Yadav is the last man in for India.

  • 18.5

OUT! TAKEN! Take a bow, Keemo Paul! He's picked up a five-wicket haul, and West Indies are just one wicket away from victory now. Paul lands this one right at the toes of the batter, allowing no room to free the arms. Axar Patel leans on and uses the wrists to flick and sends the ball sailing down to the left of deep mid-wicket. Sherfane Rutherford runs around and pouches it safely.

  • 18.4

No hat-trick! Paul comes around the wicket to the left-hander and angles it in on a good length, attacking the stumps. Arshdeep Singh exposes all three stumps but manages to hit it away through mid-wicket for a single.

  • Glum faces in the Indian dugout and a pin-drop silence in Hyderabad. West Indies are almost there. Arshdeep Singh is in at number 10 and will face the Hat Trick ball.

  • 18.3

OUT! BOWLED! Thank you very much, says Keemo Paul to Prince Yadav, and he now has a four-fer. Slower ball, pitched up on middle, and angling it in. Yadav stays back and swings across the line, but is early in his shot. He misses out on the connection and the ball crashes into the leg stump, sending it cartwheeling out of the ground. Paul is also on a hat-trick as Prince walks back for a golden duck.

  • It's been a memorable evening for Keemo Paul. He has dismissed three dangerous batters - Samson, Kishan and now Reddy, who was the last hope for India. Prince Yadav is in at number 9.

  • 18.2
    Prince Yadav b Keemo Paul 0 (1)

OUT! CAUGHT! Keemo Paul answers right back, and that should be that. Full and straight, getting the ball to reverse back in a bit, cramping the batter for room. Nitish Kumar Reddy tries to clear the front leg and go big over long on, but fails to get the desired connection. The ball lofts down to long on, where Rovman Powell comes in a bit and takes a simple catch.

  • 18.1

SIX! High and long, and Nitish Kumar Reddy is keeping the fight alive for India. 36 needed off 11 balls now. Full and outside off, but in the slot. Reddy hangs back before whacking it straight back down the ground for a huge six.

  • 18.1

WIDE! Banged in halfway down the pitch and wide outside off. This is left alone for a wide, which is called for height.

  • A boundary-less over by Springer. Absolutely stunning death bowling. India need 43 runs from 12 balls, with the required run rate reading 21.5. Keemo Paul will bowl his final over. 2/33 in 3 overs so far, he has been the pick of the bowlers for the West Indies tonight.

  • End of Over 18
    Over 18. 5 runs. Bowler: Shamar Springer. : 205/6 (rr 11.39)
    This Over: 1,0,0,2,1,1
  • 17.6

That's a top delivery to end the over, and only 5 runs come off the 18th over of the chase. Yorker-length, nailed at the toes. Nitish Kumar Reddy just about manages to smother it away to the on side for a single.
