Player Biography

There are few sights in modern cricket quite like a tall left-arm fast bowler charging in and attacking the stumps. Shaheen Shah Afridi has built his reputation on exactly that. With his height, pace and ability to swing the new ball, the Pakistan quick emerged as one of the most exciting fast bowlers of his generation. His rise was remarkably quick, but staying at the top has proved a very different challenge, with injuries and the demands of leading Pakistan adding another layer to his journey.

Afridi first made the cricketing world sit up with extraordinary figures of 8 for 39 on his first-class debut. He followed that with 12 wickets at the 2018 U19 World Cup, which brought him into Pakistan's senior setup. His T20I, ODI and Test debuts all came in 2018, and it did not take long for him to establish himself as a regular across formats. His breakthrough on the biggest stage came at the 2019 ODI World Cup. Still only 19, Afridi claimed 16 wickets in 5 matches and finished the tournament as one of Pakistan's standout performers. His rise was recognised in 2021 when he was named the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year.

One of his most memorable performances came at the 2021 T20 World Cup. Pakistan faced India in their opening game, and Afridi produced a spell that set the tone for one of Pakistan's most famous T20 World Cup wins. Afridi's impact was not limited to international cricket. He became the leader of Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League and guided them to back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. That period also underlined how much responsibility had begun to fall on his shoulders, with Afridi evolving from a young strike bowler into one of Pakistan's senior figures.

Leadership eventually followed, with Afridi taking over as Pakistan's T20I captain after Babar Azam stepped down. However, his time in the role was brief, with Babar soon returning as captain. Afridi then went through a difficult period, losing the captaincy and finding himself out of the Pakistan side at various points. It was a significant shift for a player who had gone from being the spearhead of the attack to leading the national team in a short space of time. He did, however, get another opportunity to lead Pakistan in 2025 when he was appointed their ODI captain.

After being left out of Pakistan's Test squads for the tours of the West Indies and England in 2026, Afridi returned to domestic red-ball cricket as he looked to work his way back into the Test setup. It marked another attempt to rebuild his workload and rediscover his rhythm in the longer format. For a player who burst onto the international scene as a teenager and quickly became Pakistan's premier fast bowler, Afridi's career has been shaped by remarkable highs as well as periods of injury, leadership changes and setbacks. Through it all, his ability to strike with the new ball has remained his defining quality.
